education reform

Universities are very wasteful organisations, stuck in their archaic structure and pre-modern view of controlling knowledge. Universities are essentially landlords whose buildings are never used to capacity during study periods, and are empty when students are away. The action recommended here is a restructuring of the way courses are taught and organised. Shorter more frequent classes and semesters are needed. Instead of 2, 4 month long semesters. 10, month long study periods. Instead of 1 class of 100, 5 classes of 20, taught in five seperate month long study periods. Instead of 1, 3 hour lecture. 3, 1 hour lectures. Making everything shorter and more flexible, would make Universities more sustainable and more responsive to their economic, social, and environmental needs and impact.
