Urban roofs are usually dead, sterile spaces absorbing heat and radiating it into the inside. Waste water pollution is also rampant in cities as is the waste of rainwater.Food is brought in from far and is expensive. I use grey water from washing machines and bath, collect it and pass it through 5 drums with the reed typha. The plant sucks up the pollutant and the water that emerges is used to grow rice on the roof on water proof plastic sheets. Additional water comes from rainwater and 'guppy fish' eat mosquito larvae in my roof paddy field. I get a good yield of rice and i have not allowed a drop of grey water to go out of my house. Fertilisation for the rice is from urine collected in my ecosan, source separating dry toilet also on the roof.A rain barrel provides more water.
