During my work at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research I became aware of the problem we are facing due to climate change. CO2 emissions play a key role in triggering climate change. Everybody produces CO2 emissions in day-to-day life, some more, some less, depending on the lifestyle. While I have managed to change my lifestyle and become more carbon conscious, I am still in need of a car, and I need to travel via plane from time to time. But there are things we can do. I was offsetting the CO2 emissions I am producing through air travel already, but nearly all human activities and products emit CO2 at some stage. This is why me and two collegues decided to buy emission allowances from EU ETS. We wanted to voluntarily take part in the emission trading scheme. Soon we found out that this is not as easy as it seems, but we found a way. Now we are voluntarily taking part in EU ETS on a regular basis. We account for our carbon intensive activities.
