Transmission lines cross the countryside - why not place wind turbines nearby (within the easement area) and harvest power on land that otherwise would not be used? Connection to the grid is assured and would have minimum losses involved; land is utilised more effectively.
Even in cities, transmission lines are prevalent. Along a Ring Road near me there are transmission lines - this land is a true 'wasteland'; wind turbines would add to the visual amenity and there would not be any great noise impact either. The power would be used near where it is generated, reducing transmission losses.
It would be a true win-win situation.
